Difference between play and sports training with kids

4/15/2015

Your kids love playing a sport(s) and you want to help them be the best they can be. Youth sports are becoming a big deal and often a year round endeavor. How many kids that play a sport as a young child are still playing that sport in high school, college, or as an adult either professionally or recreationally? Not many. Why? Burn out - either mental burnout or physical burnout. How do you prevent the burnout? Reintroduce play into kids lives. Playing multiple sports and playing on the playground for fun. Letting kids be creative, inventive, imaginative, and free to think, feel, and move intuitively will keep them physically healthy and mentally engaged and happy.

Why sitting and rising from the floor is important for health

Your ability to sit down on the ground and stand up from the ground is a reliable predictor of your mortality risk.

Why? Because it is a simple and fast way to test the function of the musculoskeletal system.
If you can easily sit down on the floor and stand up again without using your hands, arms, or knees for assistance and maintain your balance we can pretty accurately predict that you have a strong and functional musculoskeletal system. A strong and functional musculoskeletal system is the foundation of a robust metabolism which is the key to vibrant health.

Before we learn more, try the Sit-Rising Test (SRT) and see how you do:
If you could easily sit and rise from the floor without assistance from your hands, arms, or knees congratulations! Your lifestyle and activities are providing enough motion to maintain a strong musculoskeletal system and you can keep doing what you are doing. If you had trouble sitting and rising without using a body part or chair for help, lost your balance, or couldn't do it at all, don't lose hope! There is help!

Watch the video below to learn four simple steps and two helpful tools to help restore your musculoskeletal strength and function and your overall body health.

Pete Egoscue on Infants and Alignment

4/6/2015

Pete Egoscue, founder of the Egoscue Method, explains how all babies are born with flat feet and we only develop foot arches with proper barefoot movement as infants and children. When infants are left to move and develop freely without intervention or disruption they will develop the strength, mobility, and coordination that creates an arch in their feet along with the strength to stand and walk on their own. This early childhood development is crucial to postural alignment and living an active and pain free life as adults.

Putting shoes on infants interfere with normal muscle development and can cause children to never develop their arches. Shoes also interfere with crawling-probably the most important developmental stage in children's physical development. Crawling develops the hip, spinal, and shoulder strength and stability needed to walk, run, jump, throw, hit, push, and pull - the foundations of every sport and living a pain free life.
