Lower back pain comes in many forms including back spasms, herniated discs, stenosis, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, and chronic low back tightness and stiffness. The causes of lower back pain can be elusive and the cause of back pain is never found in 85% of patients. Often pain is the result of years of improper movement due to postural misalignments in the body. In this video Pete Egoscue, founder of the Egoscue Method for stopping chronic pain and author of the book Pain Free, assesses one man’s lower back pain and shows how shoulder alignment and a concave curvature of the spine contribute to the issue. He then goes on to demonstrate a few simple posture exercises that can help correct the spinal positioning and restore comfort in the body. Watch and see how the body adjusts instantly to this gentle conditioning. If you have chronic or episodic back pain it is important to learn what is causing your lower back so you too can fix it. Schedule your FREE postural assessment and consultation where we will evaluate your unique posture and function and determine what is causing your lower back pain and help you create a plan to get back to a pain free and active life.

This is one of my favorite videos in this blog. Easy to understand, and informative.

I was going to make a short video addressing why aligned posture is a good idea for all sports. I keep hearing athletes recommend training for their sport by playing the sport (rightly so) . But some people argue for strengthening an imbalance/compensation to help their sport. Like a rotational compensation for a golfer or boxer or surfer. How would you describe the benefit of a balanced body vs a compensating one that has adapted to the pattern of their sport and strengthened in it.

I lifted something too heavy and have been in pain for 2 weeks. I have the Egoscue book which has helped me in the past. I find that the static back and modified floor block or any of th e-cises that require lying on the floor leave me with terrible pain. I should probably avoid those at this point, right? I am 72 and quite thin with poor posture.

Hi Edith, Sorry to hear you are in terrible pain. Yes avoid anything that hurts or does not feel good. Your body is telling you those are not the right exercises for you now. Listen to your body. :) I think you would really benefit from some personalized help to figure out just what your body needs and make sure you start getting feeling better soon. I would be happy to do a free posture evaluation and consolation with you to help figure out what your body needs. If you live near Portland, Oregon you can come into the clinic for the evaluation. If you don't live close we can do the evaluation via Skype or email. Give me a call at the clinic and we can figure it out: 971-279-2189 - Matt

It is amazing! I've been in pain for 5 years and worked with other therapists and no one has been able to help me. Working with you I am 95% pain free! It feels so good to not have any pain and be able to walk and do things I haven't been able to do for years. Thank you so much! - Joni |
