How to Fix Neck and Shoulder Pain with Egoscue

1/8/2015

Watch this video to learn where common shoulder and neck pain comes from. Jennifer is an avid tennis player who has daily pain in her trapezius muscle. Most people, including Jennifer, will assume the pain is from tennis. Pete Egoscue explains how that is just not true and shows her one quick Egoscue e-cise to eliminate her pain. In this video you'll learn:

  • The site of the pain is not the source of the pain
  • The activities we do are not the cause of our pain
  • The body is a unit and must be treated as one
  • Misaligned posture and habitual movement patterns cause pain
  • Posture and pain can be improved quickly

If you have shoulder or neck pain, knee or foot pain, tennis elbow or runners knee, don't just treat your symptom but look at the body as a unit and find the underlying cause of your pain. If you need help evaluating your posture and movement patterns and figuring out what posture exercises will correct them, contact us today for a FREE posture evaluation and consultation.

These are great videos by Pete. I wonder if anyone could analyze a couple of other issues and suggested e-cises to address these ? One is "hip-hike-gait" where the primary movers for normal gait get inhibited and compensatory muscles like the quadratus lumborum have to compensate (and result in quite a bit of pain). The other is "forward-head-posture" which yoga would also describe as a dysfunction of the head-shoulder triangle and the extra load on muscles like the trapezius to support the forward-jutting head (and results in a lot of muscle fatigue as well).

Hi Steve, Thanks for commenting. Yes I think they are great also. Easy for people to watch and understand how posture and pain are connected and see changes in a real live person happen quickly! It is what we do with clients all day every day, but it's fun for people who are not familiar with Egoscue to see how it works and how quickly things can change.

Are you an Egoscue client or just saw these videos online? You sound like you have a pretty good understanding of posture, pain, yoga, and Egoscue. Are you a practitioner of some kind?

I'm sure you could suggest other topics/symptoms by either contacting Pete at 1-800-995-8434 or Sonima at: http://www.sonima.com/about/contact/

Hi Matt,
I've been working with Gary and Braondon in the Chicago clinic two years this April and find it unthinkable to miss my morning menus. I was directed to Egoscue by my orthopedic specialist who thought someone with an engineering background could relate to Pete's description of functional architecture. In Pete's latest book, I am a self-confessed "fact collector" but hopefully in a good way since the more I test Egoscue against fundamental laws of physics the more I am convinced that my orthopedic specialist was spot-on. Naturally, I devour all the Egoscue material I can and Gary and Brandon have encouraged me "you must become the expert on you." I've found a lot of beneficial material in anatomical demonstrations of muscles used in yoga, many poses of which are in common with our e-cises. This now leads me to the above questions. I think both are common enough problems for office workers and having insights from you, Rick in Austin, Gary, Brandon and even Pete himself would be much appreciated by the entire Egoscue community.

Cheers!

steve

Hi Steve,
That's great you heard about Egoscue from an orthopedic guy and have taken responsibility for your health over the last two years. I love that you are always wanting to learn more and understand how your body and Egoscue work!

Quite a few Egoscue therapists have written about forward head posture and both what causes it and what it causes. Here are some articles discussing forward head posture from my blog: http://www.oregonexercisetherapy.com/apps/search?q=forward+head+posture

"Hip hike gait" as you mentioned above, I have not written about specifically and might be a good topic for an article or video.

Are these two issues something you are personally dealing with?
If so, have you figured out what causes them? If you have, great, no need for more information really, just focus on the e-cises that positively effect it. If you don't know specially what causes the imbalances, ask your therapist(s) or think about it yourself and get clear about the answer because then you will have complete focus in your menus.

Not sure if this helped, but I hope so!

Keep doing your menus, trust yourself, and if you have other questions feel free to ask!

- Matt

Thanks much Matt, I will check your site on forward-head-posture. Hip-hike-gait has some good treatment at

http://www.ccptr.org/articles/hip-extension-and-abduction-dysfunction/

As an office worker, the shut-down of primary movers for hip extension and abduction is something we try to address in e-cises such as

http://www.egoscue.com/WebMenus/ECiseHTML/34.html

and

http://www.egoscue.com/WebMenus/ECiseHTML/38.html

Inflammation pain in the quadratus-lumborum is also addressed in this e-cise since adduction of the inner thigh also reciprocally inhibits abductor agonist and synergist muscles. Works great, but learning how to walk correctly with the prime-movers instead of these compensatory muscles is the goal and any further insight from the Egoscue team would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

steve

Hi Steve,

I am sure your Egoscue therapists have taught you what is not happening that should be happening and why and shown you e-cises to directly impact that gait pattern. It all comes down to joint position/posture and then reintroducing proper function and movement patterns. "Learning how to walk correctly" should happen automatically after your menu that corrects your imbalances. If you don't feel that happening, talk with your therapist and have them re-evaulate and re-explain your primary dysfunction and compensation patterns and how each e-cise in your menu is addressing those. Then you'll have the clear understanding you are looking for and have a clear path of posture exercises to address those issues. Your body should feel an immediate difference with the menu.
