You may experience it as lower back pain, typically on one side, that is a sharp pain, a dull ache, a stuck feeling, or feelings of numbness, tingling, or tightness of the lower back and pain in your buttock, groin, or inner thigh. Movement or prolonged sitting or standing might increase symptoms and you may feel like your leg/hip is going to give out due to weakness, instability, or pain.
SI joint pain is almost always experienced on one side of the lower back at a time. Any SI joint pain or dysfunction is due to an imbalance in the position or movement between your two hips or sides of your pelvis. Correcting this imbalance with posture alignment therapy can eliminate your SI joint pain.
Common posture imbalances that can cause SI joint pain are:
- elevated pelvis - one side of your pelvis is higher than the other
- rotated pelvis - one side of your pelvis is rotated forward compared to the other side
- femur disparity - one femur is rotated internally or externally more than the other side
- scoliosis - lateral flexion and/or rotation of the spine
- valgus or varus disparity - one knee is more valgus or varus than the other side
- anterior/posterior pelvic tilt disparity - one side of the pelvis is tilted forward or backward more than the other side
Common movement imbalances that can cause SI join pain are:
- Limited hip flexion on one side
- Limited hip extension on one side
- Limited external femur rotation on one side
- Limited internal femur rotation on one side
- Limited spinal lateral flexion to one side
- Limited spinal rotation to one side
