Understanding human psychology and chronic pain - part 1

To truly understand why someone has chronic pain and why they are not enjoying better health, and to help them achieve a pain free active life and enjoy peace of mind, we must understand their psychology along with their physiology. Only addressing someone's physiology and ignoring their psychology is often why people lose 30 pounds only to gain it back 6 months later, or go in and out of episodes of back pain, or have repeated surgeries for chronic pain.

One way to understand our own psychology is to look at why we do what we do. What are the driving forces behind the choices we make and how can we learn to make more positive choices?
Much of this information comes from Anthony Robbins, Cloe Madanes, and the Robbins-Madanes Training Center.

Every experience in life we have can be classified into one of four categories.
A 'Class 1' experience is one that:
  1. feels good
  2. is good for you
  3. is good for others
  4. serves the greater good
Class 1 experiences are the ultimate experiences because they feel good and benefit everyone.

A 'Class 2' experience is one that:
  1. does not feel good
  2. is good for you
  3. is good for others
  4. serves the greater good
You could think of these as "delayed gratification" because while they might not feel good at first, they bring us joy in the long run and help us grow. When we can get ourselves to enjoy the process of doing class 2 experiences we can turn them into class 1 experiences.

A 'Class 3' experience is one that:
  1. feels good
  2. is not good for you
  3. is not good for others
  4. does not serve the greater good
A class 3 experiences give us immediate pleasure, but have no long term purpose and hurt us and others in the long run. Examples are drinking alcohol, doing drugs, eating junk food, binge watching TV, gambling, cheating, etc.

A 'Class 4' experience is one that:
  1. does not feel good
  2. is not good for you
  3. is not good for others
  4. does not serve the greater good
Why would someone choose to have a class 4 experience? Conditioning, old belief systems, or peer pressure often cause someone to engage in a class 4 experience. Peer pressure might cause someone to smoke cigarettes for the first time even though it is not a pleasurable experience.
Let's look at some examples of things we do that affect our health, classify them, and look at the psychology behind why we do or don't do them.
  • Eating junk food is for a lot of people a class 3 experience (feels good, not good for us), but many people have changed their perspective on eating junk food and turned it into a class 4 experience (does not feel good, not good for us).
  • Eating vegetables on the other hand, for many people is a class 2 experience (does not feel good, is good for us). But again by looking at vegetables differently we can change this to a class 1 experience (feels good, good for us).
  • Sitting on the couch bing watching TV for some people is a class 3 experience (feels good, not good for us) but other people have turned this into a class 4 experience (does not feel good, not good for us).
  • Going on a run might be a class 2 experience for lots of people (does not feel good, is good for us) but to others running is a class 1 experience (feels good, good for us).
Many things that are not good for us, feel good when we first do them (eating junk food, drinking, being lazy), but do not feel good as we do them more. Many things that are good for us might not feel good at first (eating vegetables, running, going to bed early), but the more we do them the better they feel to us.
When we stop and start looking at our experiences and what class they fall into we can begin to make different choices in both what experiences we want engage in and how we look at and view different experiences. Engaging in less class 3 and 4 experiences and more class 1 and 2 experiences will have a dramatic affect on our life, health, and happiness.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS HAVE TO SAY

I really just wanted to express my gratitude for what you do and your great help. And, great help it was!! When one is in constant great pain for as long as I was and so desperate for help...words cannot express what I want to say....how can I thank you enough? You helped change my life.
– Carrie
I feel soooo limber and free in my hip movements and relaxed in my low back. Outstanding and I'm very impressed with the pdf's and the videos, great support to the client. Wonderful job, keep up the great job. – Mike
It is amazing! I've been in pain for 5 years and worked with other therapists and no one has been able to help me. Working with you I am 95% pain free! It feels so good to not have any pain and be able to walk and do things I haven't been able to do for years. Thank you so much! - Joni
